An example is the case of the "hackers" in the early days of computing, when hacking did not connote illegal activities. These early hackers were respected for what they could do, not for who they were or for what degrees or credentials they could bring to bear.

This is the basic model of all dyadic oral communication. The third and final type of conversation is the discussion. In the discussion, we have one person who starts as the sender and multiple receivers. While it is important for the receivers to take turns as senders, in the discussion the initial sender still usually retains control of the conversation. These issues are particularly important for attempting to understand the nature of communication on the Internet. Is Internet communication like conversation?
