There are many reasons for this. Such major intellectual breakthroughs come through rarely, if at all. Also, if we try to develop theories that “work” only in Asia, we would have to deal with a major conundrum created by Western social science. It works on the assumption that if social science reaches a finding based on an experience in, for example, Boston, the finding has universal applicability.

    So what should the correct response of a school like ours be?     Given our awareness of these challenges, our School set up a high-level panel of academics to advise our School in 2012. They comprised a group of four academics, namely Professor Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Professor Geert Bouckaert, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven; Professor Stephen Walt, John F. Kennedy School of Government; and Associate Professor Michael Mintrom, University of Auckland.
