EXAMPLES OF HISTORICAL INFLUENCE ON THE ARTS In 1937, Pablo Picasso painted a large mural entitled Guernica for the Spanish pavilion in the Paris International Exposition. He chose an allegorical representation to show how the small town of Guernica had been sacrificed by Spanish leader Franco to the brutality of Germany's "blitzkrieg" during the Spanish Civil War. Using distortion and stark colors, Picasso created a personal, and public, symbol for the horrors of war.
