If you want to find a mate, save a marriage, get a job, sell a used car, educate the public, prevent a war . . then communicate! Why have people recently become so interested in problems of communication? What set of forces or events has motivated this preoccupation? According to the distinguished philosopher, McKeon (1957), our preoccupation with communication today is not an accident, but rather a response to the convergence of four trends in contemporary society. The first of these is a trend toward an increase in tolerance for cultural, group, and individual diversity.

Both one's general sense of being a unique person and the more specific elements of the self-concept . . depends absolutely upon participation in certain kinds of close, personal relationships with others. We call these interpersonal relationships. The structures of an interpersonal system are not imposed from without, but emerge from the interaction of the people. The typical network form of an interpersonal system is the dyad (two people) within a friendship or family network. An interpersonal system tends to evolve a private code based on the personal styles and experiences of the individuals.

The system perspective on interpersonal communication should be seen in contrast to the major alternative, Page 16 an atomistic perspective that views interpersonal communication strictly from an individual standpoint. This issue arose earlier in the context of characterizing our contemporary communication environment as made up primarily of diverse individuals who are interdependent with others for the solution of their mutual problems. We argued that the basic function of communication systems in such a context is the regulation of consensus.
