Chlorides Samples of concrete obtained by drilling are sufficient for a laboratory test to determine chloride content. To establish whether chlorides are widespread or restricted only to the surface layers of the concrete, samples from different locations and depths should be taken. Sampling by drilling is described in detail in BRE Information Paper IP 13/77 (19 in bibliography). An alternative method which can be used on site is the commercially available 'Quantab' test strip. This is a small plastic strip which, when inserted in a solution of concrete powder, changes colour to indicate the proportion of chlorides present.
